ISAIAH 51:15-16 (NKJV)

MARK 11:13-14

WATER MANAGEMENT
Water is one of the most important substances on earth. Without water there wouldn’t be life on earth. All plants and animals must have water to survive. Uses of water and water bodies are diverse including drinking, cooking, washing, farming, fishing, industry, tourism, recreation and transport. Proper function of our lakes and rivers help to ease the impact of floods and droughts by storing large amounts of water and releasing it during shortages. Lakes also replenish groundwater and preserve biodiversity. It is our responsibility to practice stewardship of our water bodies by keeping them healthy for present and future generations.
Uganda has been called a land of lakes because nearly 20% of its surface is covered by fresh water or swamps. Almost half of the second largest fresh water lake in the world – Lake Victoria – lies in Uganda and so do three other great East African lakes: Lake Albert, Lake Kyoga, Lake Edward, and Lake George. When the crater lakes and smaller lakes are counted in, Uganda has 165 lakes, most of which are serviced by rivers and streams. The longest river in the world, the Nile, begins its 6,650 km northward journey to the Mediterranean Sea from southern part of Uganda.
The Ministry of Water and Environment (MWE) is the Government ministry that oversees water management. It was established in 2007 from the then Ministry of Water, Lands and Environment. It has the overall responsibility of the development, managing, and regulating water and environment resources in Uganda. In 1995, Uganda made history as the second country worldwide, after Canada, to pass a wetlands policy.

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

PSALM 24:1,2
The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein,

Thus says the Lord, who gives the sun for light by day

Do you not fear me? declares the Lord. Do you not tremble before me?
I placed the sand as the boundary for the sea, a perpetual barrier that it cannot pass; though the waves toss, they cannot prevail; though they roar, they cannot pass over it.

ISAIAH 27:1
In that day the Lord with his hard and great and strong sword will punish Leviathan the fleeing

PSALM 95:1-5
Oh come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!
Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of
praise!
For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods.
In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also.
The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land.
THANK GOD FOR:
- Give thanks and appreciate God for the abundant water resources He has given to Uganda as our inheritance which covers almost 20% of Uganda’s total area comprising big lakes like Victoria, Kyoga, Albert, George and Edward, and, Rivers Nile, Katonga, Semiliki, Aswa, and Malaba among others. There are also swamps and wetlands.
- Two rainy seasons in a year that water our land and replenish the water bodies.
- The second largest freshwater body in the world – Lake Victoria and the River Nile, the longest river in the world that commences its northward journey from Uganda. God has called us to water the nations.
- The beautiful weather and climate we have as a result of the abundant natural vegetation and many rivers, springs and lakes.
- The underground water source in many parts of Uganda that enables communities to access water through natural springs and through the drilling of boreholes.
- For the innovation of rainwater harvesting that enables water stressed communities to harness nature.
PROCLAMATION FOR WATER MANAGEMENT
A declaration of what we are praying for
God is raising leaders at all levels in Uganda that will handle water management matters with
righteous and justice.
The idolatry linked to our water bodies will be overthrown.
There will be good responsible management of the sector with effective planning and coordination
for present and future generations.
Polices will be formulated and robustly enforced that will set standards, provide for inspections and
technical support leading to the efficient utilization of our water bodies.
Our water bodies will be sustainably utilized for the socio-economic development of the country. Uganda’s abundant water supply will be well utilized for agriculture, fishing, industry, trade, transportation, recreation and tourism.
Both urban and rural areas will be provided with safe water supply and sanitation systems.
Quality water will be available in abundance in small towns, large towns, municipalities and cities. There will be an abundance of gravity flow systems, solar pumped boreholes and surface treated systems.
Communities will learn to harvest water and be able to farm all year round.
Deforestation will be reversed and there will be effective management of forests and trees to yield
increases in economic, social and environment benefits.
Massive nationwide tree planting campaigns will restore the protection of water catchment areas.
Wetlands will be protected and used wisely.
Those who destroy fresh water bodies by cultivating along shores, discharging chemicals and
untreated sewage, and, destroying forest cover will be resolutely stopped.
There will be peaceful collaboration with neighbouring countries in the management of the trans
boundary water resources Lakes Victoria, Albert and Edward and the Nile Basin countries.
