PRAYER GUIDE

ISAIAH 51:15-16 (NKJV)

15But I am the Lord your God,
Who divided the sea whose waves roared—
The Lord of hosts is His name.
16And I have put My words in your mouth; [Emphasis Added]
I have covered you with the shadow of My hand,
That I may plant the heavens,
Lay the foundations of the earth, [Emphasis Added]
And say to Zion, ‘You are My people.’”

JEREMIAH 1:9,10 (ESV)

Then the Lord put out his hand and touched my mouth. And the Lord said to me,
Behold, I have put my words in your mouth.
See, I have set you this day over nations and over kingdoms,
to pluck up and to break down,
to destroy and to overthrow,
to build and to plant.”

GUIDING TEXT FOR THE FASTING SEASON

ISAIAH 32:1-8

1Behold, a king will reign in righteousness,
And princes will rule with justice.
2A man will be as a hiding place from the wind,
And a cover from the tempest,
As rivers of water in a dry place,
As the shadow of a great rock in a weary land.
3The eyes of those who see will not be dim,
And the ears of those who hear will listen.
4Also the heart of the rash will understand knowledge,
And the tongue of the stammerers will be ready to speak plainly.
5The foolish person will no longer be called generous,
Nor the miser said to be bountiful;
6For the foolish person will speak foolishness,
And his heart will work iniquity:
To practice ungodliness,
To utter error against the Lord,
To keep the hungry unsatisfied,
And he will cause the drink of the thirsty to fail.
7Also the schemes of the schemer are evil;
He devises wicked plans
To destroy the poor with lying words,
Even when the needy speaks justice.
8But a generous man devises generous things,
And by generosity he shall stand.

COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP

JEREMIAH 29:7
But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf,
for in its welfare you will find your welfare.

As we close off the week of focus on families and related communities, today we are addressing leadership in our communities. God loves the places where people live. It is there that the people Jesus died for are in high concentration. Satan on the other hand seeks to set up obstacles to the kingdom of God advancing in the place where you live. Both the kingdoms of light and darkness target leadership because whoever controls the leadership of the community has an upper hand in pushing their agenda.

The Jewish exiles carried off to captivity to Babylon in Jeremiah’s day were very eager to go back to Jerusalem quickly. However God had other plans; they were to stay in exile for seventy years. So God told them to settle down and participate in the life of the foreign cities they had been carried off to. We too are pilgrims in this world and are often tempted to have the same mentality the Jewish exiles had: one of not participating in the life of the city/community or promoting its welfare. We become too heavenly minded for any earthly good.

However, trouble in the community does not usually differentiate between the inhabitants. It is like the sun and rain that affect the righteous and the wicked without distinction. So God told the Jewish exiles to do three things:

  • Seek the peace of the city to which He had carried them
  • Seek the prosperity of the city to which He had carried them,
  • Pray to the Lord on behalf of the city.

Seeking the peace (shalom – total wellbeing) of our communities, means includes getting involved in the leadership of our communities. Seeking the prosperity of our communities means getting involved in community development. Community development according to the United Nations is the process of where community members come together to take collective action and generate solutions to common problems.

SCRIPTURES FOR PRAYER AND PROCLAMATION

Psalm 133:1-3
How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity. It is like precious oil poured on the head, running down on the beard, running down on Aaron’s beard, down upon the collar of his robes.

EXODUS 18:21
But select capable men from all the people – men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain – and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens.

DEUTERONOMY 16:18-22
Appoint judges and officials for each of your tribes in every town the LORD your God is giving you, and they shall judge the people fairly. Do not pervert justice or show partiality. Do not accept a bribe, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and twists the words of the righteous. Follow justice and justice alone, so that you may live and possess the land the LORD your God is giving you. Do not set up any wooden Asherah pole beside the altar you build to the LORD your God, and do not erect a sacred stone, for these the LORD your God hates.

1 Peter 2:13-14
Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether to a king as the one in authority, or to governors as sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and the praise of those who do right.”

Genesis 13: 8
So Abram said to Lot, “Please let there be no strife between you and me, and between my
herdsmen and your herdsmen; for we are brethren.

WORSHIP

Let us worship the God of Unity and Wisdom who enables community leaders to rally people together to innovate solutions for the development of the areas where they lead. The God of Abraham who gave him wisdom.

THANKSGIVING

  • Thank God for the unity expressed in Ugandan Communities that contributes to developing community structures like schools and water sources.
  • Thank God for communities’ adherence to the Presidential directive on Lock Down that helped in flattening Uganda’s curve for a long period.

PROCLAMATIONS ON COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP

Behold, God is raising leaders for our communities who will lead in righteousness and justice. These will be capable men and women who fear God and are not corrupt. They will not pervert justice or show partiality and will hate bribes.

As the Body of Christ awakens from slumber and takes on her role to disciple the nation and its communities, many of these leaders will be sons and daughters of the Kingdom of light. They will be peacemakers who will foster harmony between citizens.

They will be as a hiding place from the wind for their communities and a cover from the storm. They will be a source of refreshment and renewal as rivers of water in a dry place. They will be a covering from the heat of our times just like the shadow of a great rock in a weary land.

They will be servant leaders and will leave their communities become much better than they found them. Through their leadership, they will open up the eyes and ears of citizens and banish ignorance and daftness.

They will have firm hands on the errant in society and workers of evil and iniquity. As a result wisdom and honor will be restored to their true meanings; generosity will abound and foolishness and wickedness will be despised. The fool will no longer be called ‘Noble’ neither will the crook be called ‘Honorable’.

The company of leaders who practice iniquity and ungodliness, and those who utter error against the Lord will diminish. So will the corrupt leaders who keep the hungry unsatisfied, and cause the drink of the thirsty to fail together with those who scheme evil and devise wicked plans to destroy the poor with lying words. Rather the generous and upright will stand and the righteous will flourish in this new season. AMEN!
