The financial sector is the part of the economy made up of firms and institutions that provide financial services to commercial and retail customers. Activities for individuals, organizations and societies are either financed by accumulated savings, or by loans of some sort from a third party. Uganda\u2019s financial system is composed of formal institutions including banks, microfinance deposit-taking institutions, credit institutions, insurance companies, development banks, pension funds and capital markets. Semi informal institutions include savings and credit cooperative associations (SACCO) and other microfinance institutions, whereas the informal ones are mostly village savings and loans associations.<\/p>\n The Bible encourages the fostering of a saving culture and discourages the accumulation of debt. Money owed means labor owed and so it is prudent to choose one\u2019s master carefully. In the two parallel parables of the talents told by Jesus in Matthew 25:14-30 and Luke 19:11-27, the two investing servants are praised by their master, and the third non-investor is chastised for being passive with the funds. In both versions of the parable, the master states similarly to the derided servant that \u2018you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest\u2019 (Matthew 25:27). That is the very least the master expected of the servant, meaning that he expected better use of the entrusted resources.<\/p>\n Greed and problems connected with it are mentioned in numerous passages in Scripture. In both the Old and New Testaments there are warnings on the dangers of greed for wealth in general, and for money in particular.<\/p>\n SCRIPTURES FOR PRAYER AND PROCLAMATION<\/strong><\/h4>\n GENESIS 41:34-36 \n<\/strong>Let Pharaoh proceed to appoint overseers over the land and take one-fifth of the produce of the land of Egypt during the seven plentiful years. And let them gather all the food of these good<\/strong> years that are coming and store up grain <\/strong>under the authority of Pharaoh for food in the cities, and let them keep it. That food shall be a reserve for the land<\/strong> against the seven years of famine that are to occur in the land of Egypt, so that the land may not perish through the famine.\u201d<\/p>\n PROVERBS 22:7 \n<\/strong>The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is the slave of the lender.<\/p>\n PROVERBS 27:23-27 \n<\/strong>Know well the condition of your flocks, and give attention to your herds, \nfor riches do not last forever; and does a crown endure to all generations? \nWhen the grass is gone and the new growth appears and the vegetation of the mountains is \ngathered, \nthe lambs will provide your clothing, and the goats the price of a field. \nThere will be enough goats’ milk for your food, \nfor the food of your household and maintenance for your girls.<\/p>\n PROVERBS 28:8 \n<\/strong>Whoever multiplies his wealth by interest and profit gathers it for him who is generous to the \npoor.<\/p>\n PSALM 37:21 \n<\/strong>The wicked borrows but does not pay back, but the righteous is generous and gives;<\/p>\n ECCLESIASTES 5:10 \n<\/strong>He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves wealth with his income; \nthis also is vanity.<\/p>\n PROVERBS 13:11 \n<\/strong>Wealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever gathers little by little will increase it.<\/p>\n PROVERBS 23:4-5 \n<\/strong>Do not toil to acquire wealth; be discerning enough to desist. When your eyes light on it, it is gone, \nfor suddenly it sprouts wings, flying like an eagle toward heaven.<\/p>\n PROVERBS 22:16 \n<\/strong>Whoever oppresses the poor to increase his own wealth, or gives to the rich, will only come to \npoverty.<\/p>\n MATTHEW 6:24 \n<\/strong>\u2018No one can serve two masters.
