FRIDAY, 18th SEPTEMBER 2020: THE MEDIA

PRAYER GUIDE

ISAIAH 51:15-16 (NKJV)

15But I am the Lord your God,

Who divided the sea whose waves roared—

The Lord of hosts is His name.

16And I have put My words in your mouth; [Emphasis Added]

I have covered you with the shadow of My hand,

That I may plant the heavens,

Lay the foundations of the earth, [Emphasis Added]

And say to Zion, ‘You are My people.’”

JEREMIAH 1:9,10 (ESV)

Then the Lord put out his hand and touched my mouth. And the Lord said to me,

“Behold, I have put my words in your mouth.

See, I have set you this day over nations and over kingdoms,

to pluck up and to break down,

to destroy and to overthrow,

to build and to plant.”

EZEKIEL 37: 3-5, 7, 9, 10

And he said to me, “Son of man, can these bones live?” And I answered, “O Lord God, you know.” Then he said to me, “Prophesy over these bones, and say to them, [Emphasis Added] O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord. Thus says the Lord God to these bones: Behold, I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live….

So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I prophesied, there was a sound, [Emphasis Added] and behold, a rattling, and the bones came together, bone to its bone…

Then he said to me, “Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say to the breath, [Emphasis Added] Thus says the Lord God: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe on

these slain, that they may live.” So I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, [Emphasis Added] and they lived and stood on their feet, an exceedingly great army.

MARK 11:13-14

And seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to see if he could find anything on it. When he

came to it, he found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. And he said to it, [Emphasis Added] “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard it. [Emphasis Added]

MARK 11:22-24

And Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God. Truly, I say to you, [Emphasis Added] whoever says to this mountain, [Emphasis Added] Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says [Emphasis Added] will come to pass, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, [Emphasis Added] believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.

GUIDING TEXT FOR THE FASTING SEASON

ISAIAH 32:1-8

1Behold, a king will reign in righteousness,

And princes will rule with justice.

2A man will be as a hiding place from the wind,

And a cover from the tempest,

As rivers of water in a dry place,

As the shadow of a great rock in a weary land.

3The eyes of those who see will not be dim,

And the ears of those who hear will listen.

4Also the heart of the rash will understand knowledge,

And the tongue of the stammerers will be ready to speak plainly.

5The foolish person will no longer be called generous,

Nor the miser said to be bountiful;

6For the foolish person will speak foolishness,

And his heart will work iniquity:

To practice ungodliness,

To utter error against the Lord,

To keep the hungry unsatisfied,

And he will cause the drink of the thirsty to fail.

7</sup>Also the schemes of the schemer are evil;

He devises wicked plans

To destroy the poor with lying words,

Even when the needy speaks justice.

8But a generous man devises generous things,

And by generosity he shall stand.

THE MEDIA

The instruction to write down an account, experience, observation, or prediction appears over 90 times in the Bible. God is a record keeper and in His dealings with men he often instructed (and still instructs) them to keep a record of experiences or encounters. These accounts were for the benefit of both those still alive, and for posterity. The accounts were to be accurately recorded and then conveyed in truth – reflecting His character as the source of all truth. God’s archenemy on the other hand is the purveyor of lies and falsehood – he is the Father of lies and liars. His ability to distort the truth led to the deception of Eve and the fall of mankind. The devil presented to Eve a corrupted version of the truth. Not much has changed since, as men distort the truth and present it for public consumption.

Both truth and lies are very powerful: one as a force for good and the other as a force for evil. The media is the main means of mass communication (broadcasting, publishing and the Internet). It can therefore be used for good, or for tremendous evil. Alice Bailey, prophetess of New Age, understood this and targeted media as the main channel to change human attitude against the Judeo Christian ethic. The result is that most major media outlets (both local and international) have liberal values that knowingly or unknowingly reflect the Bailey antichrist agenda.

God is both an audial and visual communicator. In the Garden of Eden it appears God often visited Adam and Eve in the cool of the day. They would hear the sound of God walking in the Garden. The words vision, visions, dream, and dreams appear in the Bible over 240 times. The first person recorded in the Bible to have received a vision from God was Father Abraham. The account in Genesis 15 was audial as well as visual. Later God often communicated with prophets through visions. God created the gift of sight plus a colorful world; from three primary colors with up to 10 million different hues that a human eye can see.

Audio-visual communication is passing on information in the form of sound and vision. Films, Television programs, video chat etc. are examples of audio-visual communication. This type of communication can provide information more quickly, effectively, and emotionally. Research suggests that we are far better at learning and remembering content we’ve seen in pictures than as text. Motion tends to heighten our emotional responses to images. While words have a place because they help us explore concepts more deeply, in a world where attention spans are short and time-constrained, visual communication is becoming more important. As with all other things, anything that has the potential for great good also has the potential for great evil.

Social media refers to websites and applications that are designed to allow people communicate more efficiently, and in real-time. Though this mode of communication started on computers, the introduction of tablets and smart phones has greatly expanded their usage. The advent of social media has created a new scenario that has made everyone with a smart phone a potential journalist – producer of content with the potential to reach the world. The ability to share photos, opinions, events, etc. in real-time has transformed the way we live and do business. We now can reach out to millions of people even across the borders of our nations through Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter, snapchat, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Instagram by just using your phone. Each believer can use his or her phone to spread to a much wider audience the things which are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, excellent and praiseworthy according to Philippians 4:8.

Social media is the new form of “word of mouth”. It amplifies the power of the tongue perhaps more than anything else in human history. Great responsibility is needed for anything that has great power. While the benefits of social media are enjoyable, many are still unaware of its dangers and power to even destroy themselves. When a social media post is shared out by a large number of people, it is said that the post went “viral” i.e. it is spreading like a virus. This can be good if the post is positive but is can also be evil and destructive if the post is negative – promoting anger, fear, terror, lust, and negativity. Just like the tongue, social media doesn’t do anything to people, it only reveals what is in one’s heart. In this way it is an extension of the tongue.

Addiction to social media is becoming the new “drug addiction”. It has been described as being more addictive than cigarettes and alcohol. Social media sites provide tools that allow people to earn other’s approval for their appearance and the possibility to compare themselves to others. ‘Selfieholics’ and people who spend most of their time posting and scrolling are the ones most vulnerable to this. Another growing concern is cyberbullying. This has had a negative effect especially on teenagers who are very vulnerable to others’ opinions about them.

According to a census report dated 12th May 2020 from the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance, Uganda has 309 FM radio stations. Social media is however showing strong growth and increasingly phasing out the other forms of media as it becomes more dominant – making it a very powerful means of mass communication. This is an opportunity for both good and evil. As already stated, both truth and lies are very powerful: one as a force for good and the other as a force for evil.

The government ministries and agencies that oversee media in Uganda are the Media Council, the Uganda Communications Commission, and the Ministry of Information, Communication and Technology, and National Guidance.
